When it comes to evaluating prospective B-university candidates for the Admissions Committee, the Essays are critical to admissions decisions. They must be ‘your voice’ and must be as genuine as possible. Universities are interested to know why you wish to pursue an MBA, what you have to offer to this field and how you could contribute to the learning experience of your MBA peers. And the best way to do that is to find it out from you.

Typically, you can expect to be asked about your reasons for pursuing the MBA, your immediate and long-term career plans, and why you chose this particular program over others. This is your Personal Statement type essay. This essay is common to all your universities though it may need to be customised for each.

In addition, applicants are asked to write their response to a unique set of questions as published in the application forms. These are 'Topical Essays'. The topics vary from writing a speech that you would like to give to a graduating class in 2025, to writing about a person either living/dead with whom you would like to spend an evening and why. Or you may be asked to discuss how you have been an initiator of change in your workplace or to describe a cross-cultural experience. Top MBA Universities have between three to ten essay topics per application that you need to write. Some might be common across applications. So, if you are applying to 10 Universities, then that would work out to anywhere between 3 to 30 essays. Whew, that’s a lot of work!
