Tips on packing
There
are a number of items that you need to carry. As a traveler you are
allowed only a limited number of items / suitcases that you can
carry with you. Make a
list of the essential items and a few favorite articles, which you
would like, to place in your room.
You may receive a pamphlet from your University
describing the articles they would provide you with and the things
that you will need to carry. When
packing remember to keep aside essentials like medicine, official
documents that you can carry in your handbag. Mark your bags both in
side and out side with your names and address on attractive labels.
Try as far as possible to travel light. Count your baggage every
time you shift from one place to another.
The following items must be on your
list:
Passport:
Carry your passport. Also
make a photocopy of your passport which you can leave at home. Make
a note of your passport number, date and place of issue.
Carry 2 passport sized photographs and a certified copy of
your birth certificate. If you loose your passport, you can take the
documents mentioned above to the nearest Indian consulate.
Ticket:
Make a photocopy of your ticket, your ticket number (all connecting
flights), issuing agents name and address. Keep this with you at
all times, separate from your ticket.
Cash:
Do not carry large amounts in cash.
Carry bulk of your money in travelers Cheques.
Make some change that you can use to make calls or to buy
coffee and snacks at a vending machine. Once you get to your
destination, open a bank account where you can deposit your cheques.

that you have warm jackets/ sweaters, gloves and mufflers.

as the clothes that you wear in your home country may not suit the
climatic changes of the United States.
Insurance
papers: A copy of your insurance papers and the
contact
numbers of your agent should always be kept handy.
Medicines:
Keep all prescriptions handy.
If you wear lenses or glasses carry a spare with you.

Take a few pictures that you can place on your dressing
table.

If you know the names of your books, buy them here as they would be
much cheaper.
