Why are extra curricular activities important?

Extra curricular activities enhance the all round development of your personality – primarily your communication and social skills, team skills, leadership skills.   These activities enable you to develop your talents and your self-confidence, to which the American educational system allocates a high degree of importance.

What kind of certificates should I include in my application package?

Each student will have varying interests or talents.  The following are broad categories, which will enable you to decide

  • Academic Awards: for example – ‘ The Best Student of the Year Award’.

  • Talent competition Awards: for singing, dance, debates, dramatics, fine arts or awards in any other field

  • Self Development Programs that you have participated in such as ‘ Public Speaking’ courses

  • Community Service – fund raising campaigns for various social causes, visits to community welfare homes

  • Volunteer certificates for participation in annual day and cultural day programs held at your college.

Do these certificates need to be attested?

No.  You do not need to get these certificates attested.  A photocopy of your certificate will suffice

I have over 20 certificates.  Do I need to put all of them in my package?

NO.  You do not need to put all these certificates in.  Decide which of these certificates are most important to you.   For the remaining you can prepare a resume like the one we have shown in our sample section

Some applications forms have a table for extra-curricular activities.  Should I fill these in?

Yes, you must.  Filling in this table will give you a ‘first glance advantage’.  At one glance the admissions committee will have an overview of your achievements or talents.  This will enable you to make a good impression.

How do I fill in the table provided for the extra-curricular certificates?

In some application forms you may have space to fill in any 6 activities that you particularly enjoy.  In this case, start with the activity that is the most important to you and which is most meaningful to you.   You may be needed to calculate the number of hours per week that you have participated in a particular activity.  This is a very simple procedure that we will explain to you with the help of an example.

If you have participated in athletic meets, you will have trained for perhaps 3 months prior to the meet.  3 months is equivalent to 12 weeks.  In each week you may have practiced for 3 days.  On any given day you may have trained for 3 hours.  Hence you have practiced for 3 hours on 3 days in a week.  This is equivalent to 9 hours a week.  Hence you simply fill in 9 hours per week for 12 weeks per year.

My extra-curricular certificates are in a language other than English.  Do I need to get them translated? From whom?

Yes.  You must get these translated as some the officials on the admissions committee may not understand the language your certificates are in.  You can ask your school to give you a letter typed on the institute’s letterhead stating that you have participated in these activities.
