The admissions committee at almost every University takes into account the all-round development of the applicant.  Majority of the Universities look for applicants, who besides having a good academic background are also involved in a variety of extra- curricular activities, as these are good indicators of an individual’s emotional and social maturity. Applicant’s who have good communication, social, team, and leadership skills, and who have actively participated in extracurricular activities reflect these additional and valuable abilities and skills gained in these interactions.

These activities would include Sports, School activities such as Talent Competitions, Dramatics, Debates, being members of associations that work towards a goal such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and importantly Social and Voluntary Services such as fund-raising drives for the poor and not-so-fortunate.

Your application package should include certificates of all activities that you participated in. These do not have to be attested, which are not only proof of your participation but also indicate the wide variety of interests you as a person have!  These certificates could be:

Academic Awards              -   For example  ‘ The Best Student of the Year Award’.

Talent competition Awards  -   For singing, dance, debates, dramatics, fine arts or
                                            awards in any other field.

Self Development Programs-   That you have participated in such as ‘ Public
                                            Speaking’ courses.

Community Service            -   Fund raising campaigns for various social causes,
                                            visits to community welfare homes.

Volunteer certificates         -   For participation in annual day and cultural day
                                            programs held at your college.

There are university application forms, which have tables (as shown in the FAQ section), with space to fill in your extracurricular activities’ information.  In this case, start with the activity that is the most important to you and which is most meaningful to you.   You may be needed to calculate the number of hours per week that you have participated in a particular activity.  This is a very simple procedure that we will explain to you with the help of an example.

If you have participated in athletic meets, you will have trained for perhaps 3 months prior to the meet.  3 months is equivalent to 12 weeks.  In each week you may have practiced for 3 days.  On any given day you may have trained for 3 hours.  Hence you have practiced for 3 hours on 3 days in a week.  This is equivalent to 9 hours a week.  Hence you simply fill in 9 hours per week for 12 weeks per year.  Please refer to our Samples section.

If you have participated in a number of extracurricular activities then we recommend that you send it in the form of a resume.  This resume of extracurricular activities should include the year/s the activity took place, information on the activity and the award won.  If you have certificates in a language other than English, please make sure that you translate the same on the institution letterhead and send along in the extracurricular package.

In case you have not received a participation certificate for any of the activities, then you may mention the activity and give details on what exactly it was that you did.  For example when participating in community service programs or fund raising drives for charitable organizations.
