The types of essays can be divided into three broad categories.  The ones you need to write as an undergraduate student,  as a masters / doctorate student (other than business related fields) and as a  MBA student.

The one essay that is common to all of the above categories is called, the Statement of Purpose or the Mission Statement.  This essay talks about you - your ambitions and achievements, your need to pursue a degree, what you hope to achieve in the future after completion of your degree.  Other than this we have categorized the essays required for each type of degree:

Undergraduates: you could be asked to write on:

A ‘significant event’ that has impacted or changed your life – you can write on any event which could be a holiday that you took, or an art exhibition you saw or a friend that you lost. But remember it must be any significant event that impacted your life.

The person you admire the most – please refrain from Gandhiji, Jinnah, Bhuto, Bill Clinton or Gates as almost every second applicant chooses to write on one of these! Try and keep in mind someone relevant to you!  In your essay bring out why you admire this person and what are the qualities that you hope to imbibe from this personality

Leisure activity that you enjoy the most and why

Masters/ Doctorate: you might be asked to write:

  • Statement of purpose

  • Statement of goals

In your statement lay stress on your research interests and on any research or project work that you have completed in the past.

A Masters in business or business related fields: for you topics vary from university to university:

The MBA candidate will probably face the most variety of essay topics.  From your essays the admissions committee would evaluate your leadership and managerial potential and the contributions that you will possibly make to the new MBA class.  Your essays need to be well written, clear, concise and well thought out.   Some examples of essay topics have been provided

    • You may be asked to write about a person either living/dead or fictional that you would like to spend one evening with and how would you spend it?

    • You may be asked to write a speech that you would give the graduating class of year 2015

    • Some schools may require five to six separate essays in which you are expected to write at length about your motivation, your strengths and weaknesses, your greatest achievement and solutions to hypothetical problems.
