The types of essays can be divided into three broad categories.
The ones you need to write as an undergraduate student,
as a masters / doctorate student (other than business related fields) and
as a MBA student.
The one essay that is common to all of the above categories is called,
the Statement of Purpose or the Mission Statement. This essay talks about you - your ambitions and achievements,
your need to pursue a degree, what you hope to achieve in the future
after completion of your degree.
Other than this we have categorized the essays required for
each type of degree:
Undergraduates: you could be asked to
write on:

A significant event that has impacted or changed your
life you can write on any event which could be a holiday that
you took, or an art exhibition you saw or a friend that you lost.
But remember it must be any significant
event that impacted your life.

The person you admire the most please refrain from
Gandhiji, Jinnah, Bhuto, Bill Clinton or Gates as almost every
second applicant chooses to write on one of these! Try and keep in
mind someone relevant to you! In
your essay bring out why you admire this person and what are the
qualities that you hope to imbibe from this personality

Leisure activity that you enjoy the most and why |
Masters/ Doctorate: you might
be asked to write:

Statement of goals
In your statement lay stress on your research interests and on any
research or project work that you have completed in the past.
A
Masters in business or business related fields: for you topics vary
from university to university:
The MBA
candidate will probably face the most variety of essay topics. From your essays the admissions committee would evaluate your
leadership and managerial potential and the contributions that you
will possibly make to the new MBA class.
Your essays need to be well written, clear, concise and well
thought out. Some
examples of essay topics have been provided

You may be asked to write about a person either living/dead
or fictional that you would like to spend one evening with and how
would you spend it?

You may be asked to write a speech that
you would give the graduating class of year 2015

Some schools may
require five to six separate
essays in which you are expected to write at length about your
motivation, your strengths and weaknesses, your greatest achievement
and solutions to hypothetical problems.
